i have a 36" square solar panel on top which is connected to the chassis batteries. Does the kill switch on the engine have to be on for the batteries to accept the charge from the panel? Batteries are 3 yrs old installed at Lazy Days and i have to start the gen set before I can start the engine. (or use the aux button activating the house batteries to suppliment enough to start the engine.)

A 36" square solar panel will probably have about a 2amp output which is not enough to be considered a charge. More of a battery maintainer for the drain created by co detector etc... It usually sends current to the batteries around the disconnect but it will be fused somewhere near the battery. A volt meter needs to be used to cinfirm current from the solar panel. Also check water level in batteries as well as the terminals being clean and tight.

It sure sounds like your engine battery is toast. Don't believe the panel connected to the starting battery is doing you a bit of good. It's time to have your starting battery checked out by a pro if you don't have the equipment to do it yourself.

Thanks Jim,
That's my next step. I just thought it odd that both would give out at the same time.

Good advice to have battery checked by a pro. There are a lot of people that will sell you a new battery which may not be your problem. A proper load test or newer tester will test the resistance in a battery. The newer tester can be used without charging battery. A load test will require properly charging the battery first.
