House hasn't sold yet but I'll be retired as of 1/22/10, husband retired since 4/1/09. Did anyone rent before they bought their first rig? Where from? How was the experience? Do you think it made better sense, money wise, to rent versus setting out for our first trip with just our car. We will have some relatives to stay with now and then. However, I really didn't want to do that. It seems like such an imposition. We rented when the kids were younger (all grown up and moved away now) and again 4 years ago. The only thing I didn't like was not having a pull car. That was the pits. Any suggestions or opinions would be very appreciated!!

I think renting is a wise idea for a newcomer to RVing. It gives you a chance to gain some experience before plunking down your hard earned money. Living in an RV for more than a few weeks involves some lifestyle changes and it is very hard to understand what the tradeoffs are on layout and amenities until you give it a try. In your case, renting first sounds like a really good idea. It's not inexpensive, though.

Renting will serve you well if you are not sure about the RV lifestyle. We are somewhat in the same position waiting for our house to sell. We have made the decision to go fulltime in our RV, and already do own one. We did rent from Copley's RV in Hobe Sound, Fl but that was a few years ago. Renting has some catches you need to watch out for, like fees for cleaning, fees for use of the generator, insurance fees, and damage. So check them out carefully and make sure you do a thorough walk around, including the roof. There are other rental companies like Rent-America and RV-Rent. You should be able to find one near you in the yellow pages or on the internet. Most rental units are Class C but a few do rent small Class A units. Most units can tow a vehicle behind them, if your vehicle is equipped for towing, or you can rent along with the motorhome a tow dolly to tow your car on your trip. On the other hand...if...you have already decided to take part in the RV lifestyle, then buying may be the better course. Hope that answers some of your question, and safe travels whatever you decide.

Hello fellow RV er's! My name is Marie and I'm new to renting RV's. I rented my first one for June 2010 for a week. I'm trying to find a place where I can review the RV rental companies in my area, St. Louis. Does any one have any information about review sites? Any help/tips will be appreciated and welcome. Thanks!

Marie: So glad to hear you are interested in camping (RVing)! I’m sure you have searched web sites to find information on renting RVs. If not, try doing that. Things to ask the rental company are: 1) Who is responsible for the insurance? 2). Do you pay mileage? Find out all costs to you. 3) If you want to tow a car, ask if you can. 4) Find out the weight restrictions on your RV. (Don’t forget to add the weight from your holding and gas tanks.) 5) Have them explain the holding tanks. 6) Make sure they show you how to completely hook up this RV when camping, and how to disconnect when you leave the camp. 7) Ask if they have a maintenance record for the RV that you can look at. (Engine, breaks, tires, etc.) 8) Check the tires and spare. How much air should they have in case you have to add air. 9) Do the tires have fine cracks or look suspiciously bald. 10) Ask what to do if you have engine or tire problems. Who do you call? If they are a reputable company, they can answer all these questions. If not, go elsewhere. Ask lots of ‘dumb’ questions. When on the road, don’t be afraid to ask a fellow camper. We LOVE to help each other. Don’t pack more then you will really use. Also very important….. stop and smell the roses. If you see a sign for the biggest ball of string… go see it. You can be back on the road in no time. Don’t try to drive too far each day. You are gonna love Rving.

We are renting a 32 ft rv for 1st time. Doing some geneology tracing as part of Lockhart Clan. Heading for N.Carolina, Virginia, DC and some points north. Have heard that RVs are not allowed in Beltway. Anything to this? Wanted to visit Vietnam Wall. Looking forward to our first adventure. Thanks, Jerry.
