I have a 31 foot slide wall on a 41 ft. coach. In windy weather the slide cover will catch the wind in pull on on the roller and then retract to the proper position. It sounds like a spring being pulled when the wind catches it. Is that normal. if not is there anything I can do to prevent that from occuring short of pulling the wall in? I have done that recently.

I am not aware of any locking devices for slideout covers to prevent the wind from extending the cover. The spring tension of the cover should be checked to be sure it is proper. Be careful not to exceed specifications for spring tension. Excessive tension will cause problems to the operation of the slideout. Excessive tension can cause room not to extend properly and seal at the top of the room.

I guess the real question then is this normal assuming proper tension and at what point would I need to retract the slide

Yes, it is normal for the slide topper to flex up and down in the wind. Other than the roller tension, there isn't anything to be done about it except to retract the slide if it bothers you too much.

Twice I have driven in high wind and the slide cover will pull out, once it tore and I had to replace it. Now I keep my eye on it via my upper convex mirrors as I drive in high wind. If the wind gets really strong, I pull over.

All awnings have an anti-billowing device. If it is not properly adjusted the wind will open the awning transit.
