I have a 2000 Winnebago Adventurer with basement air and Suburban Furnace. When setting the thermostat on Electric it is supposed to automatically switch from electric to LP when the unit gets below 45 degrees. It is currently 40 degrees in the unit and has not switched to LP which is turned on at the tank. I had my unit in for some work a week ago and your tec could not find anything wrong. What do you suggest? When we manually switch the heat to LP the furnace is blowing warm air.

What is the model of thermostat? There is a termostat that automatically changes to gas heat but another model is not automatic and has to be changed manually to gas heat.

Steve, It is a Coleman Mach, RVP-2, MECH-SUB-BASE, 6535-345, 0012. On the thermostate it states that when the temperature gets below 45 degrees it will automatically switch to gas heat. Of course, I realize if this is not the correct thermostat then it will not do that. Look forward to your reply! Thanks!

Looking up the operation of the t-stat it will continue to operate the heat pump as long as it can maintain temp inside the RV. If the temp difference between set and actual gets to a 4or 5 degree difference then it should switch to gas heat until temp is satisfied. The next time it calls for heat it will try the heat pump again first. If it once again can not maintain heat it will switch to gas heat. After three unsuccessful tries of heat pump it will lock out heat pump mode for 2 hours. Usually a heat pump will work until an ambient temp of 35*-40*. Anytime the set temp and actual inside temp is more than 4* the gas furnace should be primary source of heat. If the set temp and actual inside temp are less than 4* the heat pump will be the primary source if the outside or ambient temp is above 35* Usually if it gets colder than 35* it will start to freeze the system causing it to switch to gas furnace.

Wondering if thermostat issue is solved? The only outdoor temperature that I find being monitored is at the outside coil of the heat pump. If the temperature reaches 18* it will stop the heat pump mode until the temperature at the coil reaches 38* Since we will not maintain inside temperature when the circuit board shuts down the heat pump the thermostat will then switch to gas heat. I do not find anywhere else that the outside or ambient temperature is being monitored.

We live in Tallahassee and have set the thermostat at 65 - 70 on cold nights. The electric heat comes on and works just fine until the temperature drops below freezing and the inside gets below 45. Then everything shuts down and manually the gas has to be turned on. I am at a loss as to how to correct this problem.

The automatic change to gas heat is in the thermostat and not the heat pump/air conditioner circuits. It sounds like a thermostat problem.
