Furnaces, hot water, tire rotation and more

RV Expert Andy Dietz shares his 25 years of technical expertise as he tends to your questions.*

Q: When I turn my furnace on I can hear it try to light. It eventually lights after a few tries, but only burns for a few seconds and then suddenly shuts down. What is the problem?

A: First, make sure that you have your LP turned on. If it is, remove the screws that hold the cover on the furnace and check all of the connections on the circuit board to make sure that they are tight. Next, make sure that the combustion chamber is clear of any blockage. I have seen many furnaces with mud dabbers or frogs that have settled in to enjoy a warm, dry place to live. Lastly, check the igniter wire to be sure that it is not cut or loose. If after troubleshooting all of these areas it still does not light, it is time to service your furnace.

Q: I have no hot water coming out of my faucets. I get a blast of hot water but it quickly goes cold. My motor home is hooked up to electric and water and I have verified that my water heater is running. Where do I look next?

A: There are several things to check in this situation. First, check the bypass valve. On most RVs, it is located in the access panel which is typically near the water heater or under one of the sinks. Verify that the bypass valve is in the “NORMAL FLOW” position. Once the valve has been turned to the “NORMAL FLOW” position, run water from all the faucets until the water is hot. Second, if your RV is equipped with an outside shower, both the hot and cold water valves must be closed in order to have hot water run from all the faucets inside the RV. If the valves on the outdoor shower are left on, they will mix the hot and cold water throughout the coach’s plumbing.

Hiya Andy
I have several problems with my 1999 coach, namely leakage over the passenger side... what is the estimated cost to re-do the fiberglass roof and where ?

Depending on condition of roof sealant now. Usually just a reseal will cure thre problem but after 10yrs it might have to be scraped and sealed. Estimate could be given after inspection but usually 2-6hrs. of labor. All roof seams and side moldings.

I have a 30 Travel Trailer and I leave it plugged into my home when not in use, I noticed my battery was not working anymore when I unplugged it, and tried to raise the front of the trailer. The battery was new.?

There will be a fuse or circuir breaker at the battery. They are required to be close to the power source which would be the battery. Some 12v breakers have a reset button, some have to be disconnected to be reset.

First a visual inspection of door gasket and roof seams might reveal the problem. We also have a rain bay @ Lazydays that is used to assure we have sealed the water leak correctly. If slide or roof is leaking water should be seen in those areas too

1. Check charge of new battery with a hydrometer or voltmeter 2. Check all fuses and breakers should be located @ battery / converter 3. Check converter output should be 13.2vdc to 13.5vdc to charge battery

If it is a rubber (EPDM) roof be very careful cleaning. No pertoleum distillates are to be used. **** and Span with a soft bristle brush. Have someone on ground rinsing the side of RV as you clean the roof to prevent streaking. If it is fiberglass or aluminum an automotive bug and tar remover should work. Again be sure someone is on ground rinsing at the same time to prevent streaking or possible decal damage on sidewall.

Have the batteries properly load tested to determine their condition. A dead battery is not a bad battery it is a battery that needs to be charged. If a good battery is dead in 1-2 weeks then you need to find the drain on the battery. Common drains are co detectors, dash radio memory, electric steps being on as well as many numerous other possibilities. An ammeter will need to be used to determine the size of drain you are experiencing. Once the meter is connected you remove one fuse at a time from the chassis fuse panel to determine what circuit is causing the drain which should lead you to what component is causing the drain. Batteries are rated in cold cranking amps (CCA) and one of at least equal rating should be used when replacing.
