Trouble Shootin' with Ernie
Using a Level Gauge Cleaner

In this Better RVing video, everybody's favorite Lazy Days RV technician Ernie "The RV Guy" gives a short and dry lesson on keeping your black- and gray-water tanks gunk-free.

Will this Level Gauge Cleaner be as effective in gray water as in black? If so, same procedures as w/black water tank?

Good info. Video, sound and loading speed works fine with my Windows Vista. Just wondering if RidX or similar product would work to clean holding tank if it is filled with water and left for a week or two while RV is not being used. I think RIDX and similar products adds bacteria that works on the cleaning but dont know if other things in there that would damage guages. I have never tried it but am just wondering.

Yes, it will clean the gray tank also. A lot of grease, food, soap and many other products end up in the tank. The gray tank is often ignored for much needed cleaning and maintenance.

Phillip, I use Ridex every cycle in my black tank. Thats all I use to control odor, etc. and have had no problems. It does not fix the gauge though, as I am currently having that very problem. (Reads 3/4 full with empty tank.)

In a Itasca, it looks like the tank sensors are on the outside of the tanks, Do they get cleaned th same way?

That s helpful information. I always thought of placing rid-x in my tank but never did it. I see Phil uses if for smell and it doesn t do anything for the level readers. I ll be looking for that stuff.

I have been using Odor Con for the last 15 years in both my black and grey water tanks. My tank gauges always read empty after I dump, and I never have an odor problem. Before using Odor Con, I always had trouble with my tank gauges. Not any more!!

Basic DAWN (non- anti-bacterial) liquid dish soap works well in a gray H2O tank. Add 1/4 C to a 1/2 - 3/4 full tank and drive the RV. The detergent will clean the grease, etc. and will leave the tank clean. DO NOT add to an empty gray H2O tank.
