Rainbow Reflections of Yellowstone
An RV Love Story

How would you define nearly four decades of a marriage that has allowed you to go where you please, introduce your children to places other kids only see in books and then watch them pass that legacy on to your grandchildren?

Bill, I loved reading your story for two reasons. I also love camping and my husband and I work in Yellowstone at the Canyon General Store. This is our third year and we come back because of our love of the park. Hope to see you at Old Faithful.

Bill & Pam First trip, great news. I would love to help. October, well bring warm clothes, it starts getting chilly in Sept, and can be cold in Oct. I wanted to get you a reply soon, and will add to this, I'll take a peek at a map for a good route.

Couple questions, are you comfortable with 'dry camping'? In other words, no hookups. If so, then no proble, but if you want hookups I'll recommend a couple RV parks just outside the park. The only campground in the park that has hookups will be closed in October.

As to scenic things to not miss? WOW, there are so many, what I would suggest is to prioritize and concentrate. Some folks try to see it all, and miss a lot. If you decide to work on one area you can get a pretty cood depth for that area.

Is hiking something you want to do? There are a number of short hikes real close by.

Will you be towing a car? Best bet, while the park can be seen from the RV, the many pull offs are easier to deal with in a car.

I'll be checking back in this evening and in the morning, if you can let me know some particulars, I'll be checking on routes for you.

My suggestion, head to Dallas then north on 35 to 80 west. This takes you across Wyoming to Ogden Utah, then north on 15 to Idaho Falls, which puts you onto 20 north wight to the gate in West Yellowstone. This will keep you on better RVing roads. The shorter trip only cuts a little over 100 miles and outs you on more passes. I have driven this route from FL with slight variations in the east and it is all easy driving.

One thing aboout the time of year is the weather advisory. Snow is pretty common at altitudes. This route limits that issue.

As to places to see, eat etc. while in the Park, if you want a real nice dinner, head to Lake Hotel.

Scenic, just get here, there is a new vista around every corner.

11 days. Enough? Well, I figure you will have about 4 days driving each way, that gives you 3 days in the park. Enough? Well, never enough, but you can see a lot in 3 days.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Susan (Canyon Lake, Cal)
We will be visiting Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons the end of Sept. Will probably spend 5-7 days in each park. We are driving a 35 coach and towing a dingy. Which RV parks outside Yellowstone do you recommend. We also have a dog and cat. Thx

Good morning! End of Sept is a great time here, expect some cold weather and watch the passes for snow. So long as you are prepared it will be wonderful. For campgrounds outside the Park, in the Tetons the Gros Ventre area is nice, centrally located for touring in the Tetons. In Jackson there is not much choice, I'll have to look up the name, but it is full hookups.

Still in Teton area, and just south of Yellowstone is Flagg Ranch. Full hookupps, pull through sites. I think about $60 a night. In West Yellowstone there is Grizzley RV, real nice place and wifi, about $57 a night. Inside the park there are no sites available at this time of year with hookups. Dry camping available at Madison as well as others, a 35' will fit in some of the sites, first come first served.

You will be here after we open the New Visitor center at Old Faithful. We are stocking the shelves now. Beautiful new facility. Be sure to ask for me when you stop in.

If I can answer anything else, please ask!

Well... As stated in the article, one of the highlights for us this summer is the opening of the new Visitor Education Center. This afternoon we finished stocking ands setting up the new bookstore. Tonight there is a special reception for the benefactors and senior staff. Jolene and I will be hosting at the bookstore. Tomorrow there is the opening ceremonies, complete with horseback color guard, speakers, and all the usual. In about 2 hours the last sale will be rung up in the temporary center.

I have been busy taking phootos, so watch for the transition and final results soon.

Being from Pueblo a great one would be Mesa Verde right in Colorado. There is a campground in the park, many sites, but only 15 with full hookups. You need a reservation for these. This is a park we have not yet visited, but in our top ten. http://www.nps.gov/meve/planyourvisit/camping2.htm go to this website for more information.

If you have attained the magic age of 62 then buy your Senior Pass for $10 lifetime. This is the best $10 investment ever. If you haven't gotten there yet and plan on visiting a number of times a year, buy the Annual Pass for $80. 4 visits a year pays for this.

If you plan on visiting numerous times, be sure to buy a 'Passport' at the Visiitor Center, then when you go to all the other parks, stamp your passport. Fun way to keep track of when you visited.

Lastly, if you really like the park and want to support the mission, join the Cooperating Association/ In Yellowstone the Yellowstone Association puts profits back into programs in the park. Last year over $1.6 million dollars was raised and paid for educational programs.

Please let me know how you enjoyed your visit!

Henry (Texas)
Bill, we just completed our first six months workcamping and love the lifestyle. We will workcamp in another Texas park this winter. We would like to know how to obtain a position, such as yours at Yellowstone, for summer season of 2011. Thanks.
