It should be part of your monthly maintenance schedule to run the generator and engine. The generator should be run run a total of 2 hours a month. The generator does not have to be run for 2 hours all at one time. It can be done in 30 minute increments. Be sure to have a load on the generator when operating such as an air conditioner. The generator should not be run at idle for extended periods of time.
The engine should also be started on a monthly basis. There are more things to lubricate than just running the engine will accomplish. The rear end and wheel bearings to name a couple. When starting the engine once a month also move the vehicle approxmately 50 ft. This will lubricate items such as rear end and wheel bearings.
Another consideration is the fuel tank. Store the fuel tank at full to prevent condensation from forming in the tank. This is the same for diesel as well as gasoline. Also after 30 days gas or diesel fuel changes. Be sure to use a fuel stabilizer to prevent fuel problems. There is a stabilizer available for diesel as well as gasoline.
As for being connected to shore power I think you can see it will need to be disconnected to be able to move the RV 50ft. Under normal operating conditions no harm is done running the generator while connected to shore power. That is the function of the transfer switch.
